Infectious diseases can be caused by virus, bacteria, fungus, etc, and the status of host with infectious diseases is various, e.g. immunocompetent, immunocompromised. In Kurume University Hospital, the committee for infection control and prevention was established on April, 1978. Division of infection control and prevention was established on 2004 and Prof. Sagawa became first director. I took over that from Prof. Sagawa as second director on April, 2007. Now 3 infection control doctors and 2 infection control nurses belong to the division of infection control and prevention, and work with 18 members of infection control team, including pharmacist and medical technologist, and infection control support nurses.
Our works are rapid diagnosis for infectious diseases, appropriate advice for treatment, prevention of nosocomial infection and monitoring of pathogens which potentially cause nosocomial infection. We also emphasize the management of infectious diseases for health care workers (HCW), because HCW have a high risk of infectious diseases and infectious diseases can potentially spread via HCW in hospital.
In hospital, various kinds of HCW such as doctor, nurse, pharmacist, etc work together and provide medical service. Accordingly, it is very important for every HCW to keep high concern for infection control and prevension in order to prevent nosocomial infection. The preventive methods for infection control is changeable according to the time. We are not satisfied with our present measure for infection control and always try to collect any information concerning preventive methods for infection control widely. We intend to introduce new preventive methods for infection control aggressively and verify that subsequently. Also, we would like to establish new preventive methods for infection control using our laboratory technique.
